Genre Research

Films are categorized by the type of genre that they are. This is dependent on the common repeating conventions within the film.
Each genre has a list of conventions which an audience would expect to see within that film, due to the sort of genre that it is, however, the film does not have to contain all of the conventions associated with that genre, just the obvious ones.

The term, 'Genre' is very useful for both the creator of the film and the consumer, this is because, having a genre helps to classify the genre to target a specific audience.
A film can contain more than one genre, which would make them a 'hybrid', this is the term given to a film that contains more than one type of genre, for example, a 'Comedy and Thriller' - This means that the film would contain elements from both the Comedic side and Thriller.

The conventions, to classify a film into a particular genre are dependent on: content, themes, mood, period, plot, setting, props (mise en scene) amd recurring iconography. Classic primary film genres include:
  • Action
  • Adventure
  • Comdey
  • Crime
  • Drama
  • Horror
  • Musical
  • Science Fiction (Sci-Fi)
  • War
  • Western
My partner and I are considering to do the genre 'Action'. This is because we want to create a narrative that is very fast pace and something that will be interesting and intriguing for our audience.
